Museum Passes

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, many public spaces such as museums and libraries are closed to the public. Check the list below for closing information for each museum.

The Friends of the Essex Library purchases passes to a number of museums in the area. The discounts off the original entry fees vary according to the individual museum’s policy. Passes may be borrowed for three days and there is a $1 overdue fine for each day that the pass is late up to 10 days for a total of $10. Due to the popularity of these passes, they may not be reserved. They may be borrowed on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to one per family.

Connecticut River Museum – Essex, CT
Connecticut River Museum is open, please see their website for guidelines upon visiting.
Pass allows up to 2 adults and their children or grandchildren under the age of 18 FREE admission to the museum.

Connecticut’s Old State House – Hartford, CT
Connecticut’s Old State House is will be closed until further notice. For any immediate concerns, please feel free to reach out to the main office for The Connecticut Democracy Center at 860-246-1553.

Custom House Maritime Museum Pass – New London, CT
The Custom House Maritime Museum will remain closed for the foreseeable future. At present, visitors may tour by appointment, only, in groups of four or less. You may visit Harbor Lighthouse, details available on the Custom House Maritime Museum website.

Florence Griswold Museum – Old Lyme, CT
Admission will be limited and available with 24-hour advance online ticketing only. In order to protect visitors and staff they are adhering to state guidelines. You will be asked to follow the requirements listed on their website throughout your visit. There are no exceptions. Failure to adhere to posted guidelines will result in all party members being asked to leave. The Museum’s grounds are free and open to the public, but please wear a mask and practice physical distancing to avoid other visitors. If you need to visit a staff member, you must make an appointment.

New Haven Museum – New Haven, CT
To support our state’s efforts to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the New Haven Museum is currently closed to the public. Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art – Hartford, CT
The Wadsworth is operating at a limited capacity with timed entry in line with the state’s Reopen Connecticut capacity and safety guidelines. Visit their website for more details.
Free general admission for 2 adults ages 18 and up, free for ages 17 and younger. Please note that this pass is not valid for “Art After Hours” events, usually held after 5 p.m. every other month.

Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History – New Haven, CT
The Yale Peabody Museum is closed for renovation as of July 1, 2020. 
$6 off admission for up to 4 people. Please note: the Yale Peabody Museum will close from June 30, 2020 until 2023.
